A proven basic recipe for cake base from Wolfgang - perfect as a foundation for all types of cakes.

Ingredients (1 cake base)

  • 250g flour
  • 2 level teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar
  • 100g sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 egg
  • 125g margarine or butter

Instructions

  1. Knead all ingredients together into a smooth dough.
  2. Let the dough rest in the refrigerator for at least half an hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 200°C.
  4. Roll out dough and press into cake pan.
  5. Bake at 200°C for about 20 minutes.

For 2 cake bases (Grandma’s version)

Double all amounts:

  • 500g flour
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 2 packets vanilla sugar
  • 250g margarine (Sanella)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 200g sugar

Preparation as above, baking time: 200°C, ±20 minutes

Tips

  • Resting in the refrigerator makes the dough smoother and easier to work with
  • The base can be used as foundation for fruit cakes, cheesecakes or cream slices
  • Well-baked and stored, the base keeps for several days
